A pair of longtime business leaders and Davenport University donors have listed their Lake Michigan estate for $7.25 million after completing a $3 million renovation of the nearly 8,000-square-foot home.

Keith and Kathy Klingenberg listed their 7,778-square-foot Laketown Township mansion on Sept. 19.

Andrea Crossman, broker-owner of the Andrea Crossman Group of Coldwell Banker Woodland Schmidt in Holland, has the listing for the seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home. The property has 200 feet of frontage on Lake Michigan and sits among nearly 4 acres of woodlands.

Crossman said the price is based on the amount of lake frontage, the upgrades done to the home, its size and the rare availability of a multi-acre parcel along this stretch of lakeshore. A smaller but similarly high-end home about 2.5 miles south in Saugatuck Township recently sold for nearly $6.2 million, which Crossman said proves the continued demand for waterfront properties.

“The other thing is, (the Klingenberg home) is just north of the 1,000-acre Saugatuck Dunes State Park, so it’s very private, and there are also very few homes in that area between Holland and Saugatuck that are year-round homes,” she said.

The sellers are well-known for their business and philanthropic pursuits in West Michigan.

Modeled after exclusive, membership-based social clubs like the Detroit Athletic Club and The Chicago Club, the Commerce Club aims to fill a void that founders say has emerged with Grand Rapids’ growth.

Planned for the five-story building at 61 Commerce Ave. SW downtown, the club will feature a cafe, restaurant, an event venue, concierge services for members, offices, conference and coworking space, an executive gym and wellness center, a speakeasy and cigar lounge, and 18 fourth- and fifth-floor suites that members can lease or buy for overnight stays.

Longtime communications executive Jeff Lambert and partners are leading the $4 million project that has attracted a diverse group of investors and aims for diverse membership.

After years of what he sees as unprecedented growth and development, and with the coming Acrisure Amphitheater and Amway Stadium downtown, Lambert believes Grand Rapids is ready for a private business club similar to those in large and mid-sized cities across the U.S.
