One year ago, we handed over the keys to the City of Lee's Summit for their new Police South Substation.

What most people see is the finished building. What they do not see is everything that happened to get there.

Transforming a former fire station into a fully operational police facility meant navigating existing infrastructure that was never designed for its new purpose. Electrical systems upgraded. Plumbing rerouted. Structural considerations that only reveal themselves once walls come down.

Every discovery required a decision. Every decision required coordination between the design team, the trades, and the city. Our job was to keep all of those conversations moving in the same direction without losing time or budget in the process.

That is the part of construction that rarely makes it into the photos. But it is where the real work happens.

There is a moment in every project where the drawings stop being drawings and start becoming something real—but that transition doesn't happen on its own.

From scheduling trades to sourcing materials, every decision was reviewed against the original design to make sure nothing was lost between the blueprint and the build.

This was our work with Friendship Baptist Church to ensure a successful outcome. The result is the new 7,750-square-foot Emanuel Lisk Center for Youth Development, thoughtfully designed to blend seamlessly with the brick exterior of the existing church while creating new opportunities for worship, education, and community engagement.

The addition features eight new classrooms serving kindergarten through senior-high students, flexible learning and meeting spaces for workshops and conferences, three fully accessible restrooms, and a 125-seat multimedia-enabled chapel with enhanced acoustics and adaptable partition walls to support worship services, weddings, community events, and small-group gatherings.

What started as lines on a page became something you can walk through and be proud of—a space where children can learn, families can connect, and the community can gather for generations to come.

Not every construction project ends with a thank-you card. But at Kelly Construction Group, moments like this happen more often than not — and we believe that says everything about how our team approaches each project.

Recently, one of our Superintendents received a thoughtful note from the nurses and staff at a healthcare project we recently completed. While the gesture was simple, the message behind it meant a great deal to our team and served as a reminder that healthcare construction projects come with a different level of responsibility.

We understand the people impacted by these projects are caring for patients, supporting families, and navigating stressful situations every day. That is something our team never loses sight of. Our goal is to minimize stress throughout the construction process while bringing each space’s vision to life.

At Kelly Construction Group, we believe that showing up for our community means supporting those who show incredible bravery every single day. We are deeply honored to sponsor the Shoot for the Kids event supporting Shadow Buddies.

Funds raised help provide Courage Capes and Shadow Buddies to kids facing long-term medical challenges. Shadow Buddies are condition-specific dolls that look like them and represent what they are going through. Small things that make a big difference during a difficult time.

The goal is simple but powerful. To support more than 4,300 children in our community, giving them tools for play, connection, and a sense of confidence when they need it most.

It’s Construction Safety Week, and for our team, it is a good reminder of something Kelly Construction Group believes every day.

Safety is not a moment. It is not a checklist. It is how we plan, how we communicate, and how we show up for each other on every jobsite.

This year’s focus is “Recognize, Respond, Respect.” It starts with recognizing hazards early, responding with the right plan, and respecting the process and the people around you.
