We’ve all made the packing lists and checked the summer camp necessities off one by one.
Sunscreen—check.
Swimsuits—check.
Flashlight—check.

Then we drop pieces of our hearts at summer camp for a week or two of precious childhood fun.

It’s meant to be exactly that—full of campfire songs and canteen dinners and cabins of new friends.

It’s why news of the tragic flash flooding along the Guadalupe River in Texas hits parents especially hard.

Rescuers are still searching for at least two dozen young campers from the all-girls Camp Mystic, nestled along the river in Hunt, Texas. The area, known as Hill Country, received nearly a foot of rain—causing the river to rise an astonishing 26 feet in less than two hours, all under the cloak of darkness before sunrise on July 4th. The height of summer.

Flooding in the region has been catastrophic. Officials say at least 27 lives have been lost, with many more still missing.

The devastation is far-reaching. The human toll is unimaginable.

But it’s those precious young girls—and their mothers and fathers—I can’t stop thinking about.

Camp Mystic is one of those places we all know. Been around forever. Generations of families have gone over the years. Pure, sweet, perfect summer fun.

The youngest campers are just 8 years old…and it’s they who dominate the list of the missing today.

Their smiling faces, flooding social media and news outlets today, are so innocent and beautiful it breaks my heart wide open.

So we pray.
We pray for those little girls, for miraculous rescue.
We pray for their desperate families, for answers and comfort.
We pray for Camp Mystic, for the city of Hunt, for the state of Texas.

And we hurt with them all today. đź’”
