Salt shortage update. You've seen the news stories, now see the reality check. Snow piles are officially bigger than the salt pile these days.

Salt shortages are not new, but have made the news because so many have turned to bulk salt instead of bagged salt. Brown's has not received salt since December, but is thankfully still in decent shape...although we very much are conserving where we can. Currently have around $10k invested in salt storage alone, not counting the tonnage in storage. This time next year hopeful to have 4x that invested in salt storage. Sounds like a lot of money...but that $10k is currently saving Brown's from buying $300/ton salt that is regularly $100/ton. Most contractors have not invested in enough storage or do not charge enough to afford the investment, so they rely on others to frequently refill. Self reliance is the only way anymore. As the PDF above outlines, there are A LOT of others inline before the private contractors get those refills.

Crews are rested and ready for what's next after conquering the biggest snow storm since 2008. We'd be lying if we weren't relishing in our video of one of the only melted black lots Monday morning, 12 hours after 12" of snow piled up. A little luck. A lot of planning. Great ex*****on by our team.

This forecast for 4'+ of snow is not a winner, but Ryan Edgington and Melanie Kohlheim won our 12 days of Christmas competition. Technically Melanie won both the likes and shares competition thanks to her crafty use of both her professional and personal platform racking up 24+ likes and shares. Only fair she wins, so I'm doubling her prize to $100 to ...but also a lot of other valid effort to award so Ryan was chosen with 15 likes across Facebook and Instagram with a $50 gift card to

12th and final day of Christmas competition. The 12th day is owner's choice and goes to Frank F. of Thornville. I chose Frank because of his interactions with us from the first meeting, to calling wanting to pay his bill before we could even send an invoice. He was always genuine, kind, interactive, and trusting. We work for A LOT of great people, and Frank is one of them. He is guaranteed a gift card to a local business...but you have until tomorrow at this time to win our competition. (Find day 3 post for details)

How has it been 10 days since Christmas? Time flies when it snows and we are busy. Our 10th day shares some fall cleanup pics from the yard of Linda H. of Granville. The 9th day is all about the best looking property over all as voted by our employees. Jeff N. of Granville takes that nomination as voted by everyone of our employees. Democracy has spoken. I couldn't agree more myself whether it be a cold snowy morning, the middle of the night plowing their driveway during Christmas light season, or a cold damp afternoon looking at the sunset during fall cleanup! They will get to choose a $50 gift card of their choice just like you can if you follow the directions in our 3rd day of Christmas post!(find it, follow it, win!)
