Nevada County Assessor Rolf Kleinhans and the Nevada County Assessor’s Office are launching a two-part series to help property owners better understand how trusts can impact property taxes.

This first article explains that while trusts are a common estate planning tool, certain property transfers involving trusts may still trigger reassessment under California law. It also highlights how ownership changes, refinancing situations, and joint tenancy interests can affect property tax assessments depending on the specific circumstances.

Part II, coming next week, will cover additional trust scenarios, reassessment rules, and exclusions that may be available under California law.

Gardening season is here!

🌱 Free Compost Giveaway for Nevada County Gardeners
🗓 Saturday, May 2
⏰ 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. (or until it’s gone)
📍 Nevada County Government Center, 950 Maidu Ave., Nevada City

This is a great example of a full-circle system at work. Food scraps and yard waste collected here in Nevada County are transformed into nutrient-rich compost that helps our gardens thrive.

Adding compost improves soil health, supports stronger plant growth, increases root depth and helps retain moisture, which can reduce how much water your garden needs.

Tips for the event:
• Bring your own shovels, buckets, or containers
• Compost will be available in small quantities only
• First-come, first-served
• Residential use only (no truckloads or trailers)

This effort is supported by a CalRecycle grant that is focused on expanding organic waste recycling and education in our community.
