Today's PSA: If you recently lost a loved one or they moved to assisted living and their home is sitting vacant, be sure to contact their insurance company. Most standard homeowner's insurance policies will not cover a home that has been vacant for more than 60 days. I recently heard a story of a break in with a huge loss (ie copper pipes stolen, valuables ransacked, etc) and the insurance company would not cover anything because the home had been sitting vacant for an extended period of time. Best option is to get the home sold, rented out or occupied as soon as possible.
