🦆 TEAL SEASON IN CENTRAL KANSAS 🦆

Teal season is officially underway, and here in Central Kansas we have a front-row seat to one of the first migrations of the fall.

Blue-winged teal are some of the earliest ducks to migrate south each year. Unlike many of the “big ducks” we’ll see later this fall, blue-wings don’t wait for hard freezes and major cold fronts to start moving. Their migration can begin in late summer, with large numbers heading south through September.

That makes places like Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira National Wildlife Refuge extremely important.

Teal prefer shallow water with plenty of food nearby. Mudflats, flooded vegetation, marshes and shallow wetlands provide the seeds, aquatic plants and invertebrates they need to refuel during migration.

That’s exactly what makes Central Kansas such a natural stopping point.

Sitting along the Central Flyway, Cheyenne Bottoms and Quivira provide thousands of acres of wetland habitat surrounded by productive agricultural ground. When water and habitat conditions line up, this area can hold impressive numbers of teal during their trip south.

Another interesting thing about blue-wings: many of them are headed a LONG way. They winter farther south than most North American ducks, with birds traveling into Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean and even South America.

So those little ducks buzzing across a Kansas marsh in September may still have thousands of miles left to travel.

- Why September Rain Matters in Kansas -

As we turn the calendar to September, there will be a lot of eyes on the sky across Kansas. A good rain over the next couple of weeks could still be important for how some of this year's crops finish — and how we head into fall.

According to current USDA estimates, Kansas has approximately 7.05 million acres of corn planted this year. USDA is currently forecasting a statewide corn yield of around 126 bushels per acre, compared to 145 bushels per acre last year.

For corn that hasn't reached maturity, we're in the later stages of grain fill. The plant is still working to finish kernels and add weight, so timely moisture can still help some fields finish stronger. As corn gets closer to physiological maturity, however, the benefit of additional rainfall to final yield becomes smaller.

Milo may have even more riding on late-summer moisture.

Kansas has approximately 2.7 million acres of sorghum planted, with USDA currently forecasting a statewide grain yield of around 67 bushels per acre. That's well below last year's 90-bushel statewide average.

Depending on planting date and location, Kansas milo can still be anywhere from flowering into grain fill. Milo has a reputation for handling tough, dry conditions — and for good reason — but drought tolerant doesn't mean drought proof. Moisture during grain fill can still play an important role in kernel development and final test weight and yield.

And the importance of September moisture doesn't stop with this year's corn and milo.

A good rain can provide some late-season help to pastures, replenish soil moisture, and improve conditions as Kansas producers begin preparing ground and planting winter wheat.

That's what makes September such an interesting month in Kansas agriculture. We're trying to finish one growing season while already laying the foundation for the next.

August is when a property really starts to tell its story. Food plots are coming along, crops and native cover are at their peak, trail cameras are active, and deer season is starting to creep into the minds of buyers.
