After a storm, some of the costliest problems can hide where you can’t easily see them roof leaks, moisture behind walls, and water around the foundation.

Welcome to Maintenance Monday with Bret!

This week's tip has to do with your ceiling fan. Did you know that most ceiling fans are reversible via a switch located on the fan itself?

It's true! Not only can most fans change direction, but the direction that your fan is spinning can either make the room cooler or warmer.

Having your fan turn clockwise will help spread warm air throughout the room, making it optimal during the winter and cooler months.

Having your fan spin counterclockwise will push air downward creating a cooling effect, making it optimal for summer and warmer months.

Welcome to Maintenance Monday with Bret!

This week's tip has to do with your toilet. If you hear a sound of running water coming from your toilet, you may want to check it out. Not only can it be a problem that is wasting a surprising amount of water, it can also drive up your water bill.

Check to be sure your valve is working properly and adjust the valve and float as needed. (As an additional tip, the water level in your toilet tank should be 1-2 inches below the fill valve and the overflow tube.)

It you still hear water running after making adjustments, you may have a bigger issue, but these are a few things to try before spending a lot of money.

Radon is a colorless, odorless, naturally occurring radioactive gas that affects 1 in 15 homes in the U.S. It comes from the breakdown of uranium in the soil and is a gas that moves up through the soil to the atmosphere.

Radon causes cancer. It's estimated to cause about 21,000 lung cancer deaths per year in the United States.
It's the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States, according to the surgeon general.

According to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, about half the homes have radon levels higher than the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommended action level of 4 picocuries per liter (pCi/L).
