We just wrapped up a property line location survey, and let’s just say the view from the top did not disappoint!

Using advanced drone technology, we were able to map out the property of this stunning waterfront with pinpoint accuracy. But the best part? The aerial footage gave us a perfect, bird's-eye preview of the gorgeous shoreline where a brand-new dock will soon be built! 🛠️⚓

Our crew had a busy day capturing the full picture for our clients. First up: flying the site to collect high-precision LiDAR data. This tech allows us to map out the terrain with incredible accuracy. We also surveyed an existing pond for a client who has plans for expanding the depth and width. Starting the week with a history trivia fact with surveying.

The Four Corners "Mistake": The Four Corners Monument is the only place in the United States where four states (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Utah) meet at a single point. It was originally surveyed in the late 1800s. With modern GPS, we now know the monument is actually about 1,800 feet east of where it was mathematically supposed to be. However, in surveying law, once a physical monument is set and agreed upon by the governments, it becomes the legal boundary, regardless of the original math. So, if you visit the Four Corners Monument today, you aren't standing 1,800 feet away from the border—you are standing exactly on it, because the monument itself legally dictates where the states meet.

For thousands of years, figuring out water depth (bathymetry) meant physically touching the bottom! Here’s a quick look at how they did it:

⚓ The Lead & Line: Sailors threw a heavy lead weight tied to a rope marked in "fathoms" (about 6 feet). Fun Fact: 2 fathoms (12 ft) was the safe minimum for riverboats, called out as "Mark Twain"—which became Samuel Clemens' famous pen name!

🕯️ The Tallow Trick: They packed the bottom of the weight with sticky animal fat. The mud, sand, or shells that stuck to it helped them figure out exactly where they were navigating, even in thick fog.

⚙️ Piano Wire: To map the deep ocean without hauling up miles of heavy, wet rope, 19th-century inventors switched to ultra-thin piano wire on giant mechanical reels.

Today, we thankfully don't need heavy ropes or animal fat! While the lakes, ponds, and local waterways we survey might not be as deep as the open ocean, we use state-of-the-art acoustic sonar and modern surveying technology to map the bottom with pinpoint accuracy. 🚤💻
