This is one of the reasons why homeownership is so important. Renters have a much tougher time than homeowners when it comes to maintaining affordable housing.

Under federal guidelines, housing is considered affordable if rent or mortgage payments, plus utilities, do not exceed 30% of total HH income.

The average US renters housing costs amounted to 33% of HH income, according to a US Census Bureau survey report that tracked housing costs from 2017 - 2021. In contrast, homeowners housing costs accounted for 22% of total income.

The median age for US renters was 43 in 2021, compared with 57 for homeowners. Because younger renters are early in their careers, their median HH income was significantly lower at $41k, compared with $78k for homeowners, census numbers show.
