🦪 Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market — Now at 211 Carpenter Street in Greenport, Little Creek operates its own 10-acre oyster farm in Peconic Bay and keeps oysters at the heart of its changing seasonal menu.

🦞 Claudio’s — A Greenport waterfront institution with oysters, clams, lobster rolls, whole lobster, seafood towers and plenty of dockside atmosphere.

🐟 Noah’s — Locally sourced, seasonally rotating menus built around the farmers, fishermen, growers and producers of the East End.

🦪 The Frisky Oyster — A longtime Front Street favorite with a menu that changes daily to showcase local ingredients, paired with local and international wines.

🐟 Southold Fish Market — A North Fork seafood stop to add to the list. I’m intentionally keeping this description general because I don’t have a current official source I trust enough to make more specific claims.

🌻 Summer Isn’t Over Yet on the North Fork.

Before you trade beach bags for sweaters, there are still a few things left to do.

Consider this your End-of-Summer North Fork Bucket List. ☀️

Catch one more sunset by the water. Stop at a farm stand when everything is still overflowing with late-summer produce and flowers. Spend an afternoon sipping local wine. Eat dinner outside while you still can. And give yourself at least one evening where there is absolutely nowhere else you need to be.

If rosé is your thing, put this one on the list. The setting has a completely different personality from many of the larger North Fork wineries and makes for a beautiful stop.

🍷 The North Fork’s Best-Kept Secret? September.
Everyone thinks of the North Fork as a summer destination.
We might argue September is even better.

You’re in that perfect little window where summer hasn’t completely left, but fall on the North Fork is beginning to show up.

The beaches are still beautiful. Greenport is still buzzing. Outdoor dining is still very much a thing. But the evenings get a little cooler, the farm stands are overflowing, and harvest season is underway across North Fork wine country. 🍇

This is the time for vineyard afternoons without rushing, long lunches made with what’s being grown locally, wandering Greenport Village, grabbing something from a farm stand on the drive home, and opening a bottle of North Fork wine outside as the evening cools down.
And then there are the vineyards.

September is when you begin to see all the work that goes into that glass of wine. Grapes are being harvested, crush season begins, and the landscape slowly starts its transition toward fall.

🍇 You’ve Heard of Harvest Season. But What Exactly Is Crush Season?
If you’re visiting the North Fork in late summer or early fall, you’re arriving during one of the most important, and exciting, times in Long Island wine country.

Crush season is when months of work in the vineyard finally make their way into the winery. Grapes are harvested as they reach the right ripeness, then sorted, destemmed and/or crushed or pressed as the winemaking process begins. 🍷

And despite the name, not every grape is literally “crushed.” Different grapes and different styles of wine are handled differently, which is part of what makes this season so interesting.

On the North Fork, harvest can stretch across several weeks because not every grape variety ripens at the same time.

That means September and into fall can bring a completely different energy to wine country: active vineyards, changing vines, freshly harvested grapes and wineries right in the middle of creating their next vintage.

It’s one of those experiences that reminds you that North Fork wine isn’t just something poured into your glass, it’s grown here.

🍇 The North Fork Doesn’t End With Summer…
It just changes.

There’s a point every year when the vineyards begin their shift from deep summer green to touches of gold, amber and rust, while clusters of grapes are still hanging heavy on the vines.

This is harvest season on the North Fork. 🍷

September brings that sweet spot between seasons: warm afternoons, cooler evenings, fewer peak-summer crowds, farm stands overflowing with local produce, and vineyards preparing for one of the most important moments of their year.

And then, slowly, North Fork wine country starts changing color.
It’s one of our favorite times to be here.

Spend the afternoon vineyard hopping. Head back toward Greenport for dinner. Grab a bottle from a winery you discovered that day and bring it back to The Saltbox for a quiet evening in the backyard.

Late summer doesn’t mean the North Fork is winding down. In many ways, this is when it gets really good.

Late August into September brings grape harvest and crush season to North Fork wine country, vineyards are full, grapes are ripening, tasting rooms are buzzing, farm stands are overflowing, and Greenport still has those warm days and beautiful evenings that make you want summer to last just a little longer.

Over the next few weeks, we’re taking you along for one of our favorite seasons on the East End: what harvest actually looks like, what “crush season” means, when the vines begin to change, and some of the North Fork vineyards we think are worth knowing. 🍷

And here’s the part visitors sometimes miss: September can be one of the best times to plan a Greenport getaway. You still get the beaches, waterfront dining and summer energy, with the beginning of wine-country harvest season layered in.
