Believe me when I say you don’t want to wait out a minor home issue until it turns into a massive costly repair.

2/3rds of home repairs could be prevented with proactive maintenance.

And to make matters worse, a Hippo survey found that 67% of homeowners that experienced an unexpected home issue said it affected their mental health and relationships. 😳

Nobody has time for that SO MAKE TIME FOR THIS Maintenance Checklist

1. ROOF. A poorly maintained roof can lead to a slow leak, then lead to moisture issues and mold! At a minimum, check every spring for potential damage in the winter months.

2. GUTTERS. Leaves + debris can build up causing to water spill over and lead to foundation damage, structural damage and mold in the basement. Be sure to clear leaves every fall at a minimum + make sure your downspouts drains are pointed far and away from your house.

3. SIDING. Needs to be well-painted and sealed to avoid leaks and you guessed it, moisture and MOLD.

4. TRIM TREES. Tree limbs over the house can fall during storms/heavy winds and damage the roof. Be sure bushes are not touching the house and there aren’t any over hanging limbs.

5. PLUMBING. Water is your home’s biggest enemy. Check for leaks under sinks frequently. Keep drains clog-free.

6. WATER HEATER. Overtime, sediment will build up in the bottom of the water heater which can corrode the tank + heating elements, ultimately shortening its lifespan. Flushing hot water heater annually will help prevent buildup.

7. DRYER VENT. The leading cause for fires involving the dryer is due to build up of dust, fiber + lint in the dryer’s exhaust vent. Remove lint after each cycle to prevent moisture and vents at least 1x/year.

8. STOVE + HOOD VENTS. Cooking oils + grease is the actual number 1 cause of 🔥 in all homes. Be sure to clean your screens quarterly.

9. HVAC. Dirty HVAC equals poor indoor air quality leading to health issues including asthma.

I’d be lying if I said I don’t like the newest detox hack, gadget or tool BUT… if you don’t prioritize the air quality in your home first, the hottest new detox tool isn’t going to work very well.

Unfortunately indoor air quality is often worse than the pollution outside.

Things contributing to poor IAQ
• newer furniture
• carpet
• wearing outdoor shoes in the house
• dryer sheets
• candles + air fresheners
• humidity leading to mold/mycotoxins
• gas stove
• remodeling projects not properly ventilated
• dust/mites
• old filters
• pet dander
• dirt crawl space
• and more.

Clearly we need air to live. Make sure the air you’re breathing in your home is clean.

THE DO'S AND DON'T FOR SAFER GRILLING

DON'T use an old wire grill brush to clean, the bristle can shed and get into your food.

DO use an onion. Heat your grill to a high temp. Pierce half an onion, cut-side down along the grill. The onion's juices will steam off any charred bit of debris on the grill grates 🙂

DON'T let meat to stick to the grill

DO slice a potato and rub the flesh side on the hot grill. The starch creates a non-stick surface 😉

Happy Grilling this Memorial Day and ALL SUMMER LONG!

Believe it or not, indoor air quality will impact your thyroid!

Infact the EPA estimates that certain indoor air pollutants can be 2-5x greater than when those very same pollutants are found outside (due to lack of ventillation).

EXAMPLES OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION INCLUDE:

• outdoor and indoor smoke

• mold

• allergens settled in dust

• artificial fragrances

• bacteria

• chemicals

• toxic cleaning products

• fumes from cooking

HOW THESE POLLUTANTS INTERFERE WITH YOUR THYROID

1. PFC interfere with thyroid hormone metabolism.

2. BPAs disrupt thyroid hormone action.

3. Air pollution particles can induce cell death and the self-destruction of tissue which is commonly seen in autoimmune diseases.

4. Exposure to VOCs can lead to deficiency in T3.

5. Flame retardants (commonly found on furniture and kids pjs) cause thyroid imbalances.

6. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) interfere with thyroid hormone action and have caused thyroid and liver tumors in rats.

7. Exposure to air pollution in early pregnancy may interfere with the mother's thyroid hormone function through pregnancy (when her need for thyroid hormone is even greater) and thus affect thyroid levels in the unborn child and potentially cause premature birth.

WHAT YOU CAN DO!

• Remove shoes at the door to prevent bringing in outdoor pollutants

• Open windows regularly

• Dust regularly

• Check for mold

• Keep humidity levels around 50%

• Replace house filters often

• Use an indoor air filter

So you’re wearing a mask to avoid spreading a covid BUT are you leaving your shoes at the door to stop from spreading/tracking bacteria + toxins throughout your home?

Bacteria: think of all the places your shoes have been; stores, gas stations, public restrooms, city sidewalks, etc. I read this study the other day that stated 96% of people’s shoes had f***l matter on them 🤢

Toxins: whether you’re running around your home or the park, it’s likely been treated with herbicides and pesticides which settle over time as dust in the soles of your shoes and home.

Your home should be your healthy sanctuary, not a breeding ground for germs, fungus, bacteria and more.

Do your immunity a favor and leave your shoes at the door. 😊

Eating fresh produce? YAY YOU!

Whether you’re buying organic or not, washing your produce is a must to ensure you’re removing dirt, wax, preservatives & pesticides. Simply rinsing with water just isn’t going to cut it.

Let me put pesticides in perspective for a moment. Glyphosate (aka Roundup) is sprayed on crops to kill pests. They say the amounts are so minuscule that it will not harm you however... I like to think of it like compound interest or the dollar spot at 🎯😉, IT ADDS UP. If you are constantly surrounded by toxins, eating them & breathing them. Your body can only handle so much before it’s overloaded.

Would you willingly spray round up on your fruit/veggies at home? NO OF COURSE NOT!

“But Shannon, I just rinse and cut the skin off” you might be thinking. YIKES FRIEND! Loads of nutrients are in the skin and you don’t want to just throw those away. 😉

Here are 2 simple solutions to have on hand in your kitchen and never fret again 😘

In good health
