Did you know that Black History Month started as just a weeklong celebration?

Back in 1926, historian Carter G. Woodson launched *Negro History Week* in mid-February to honor and preserve African American history.

He chose the timing to align with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass—two figures deeply tied to Black history. Fast forward to 1976, and President Gerald Ford officially recognized Black History Month, expanding the celebration nationwide.

Each year, the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) selects a theme, and for 2025, it’s all about

This theme highlights Black workers throughout history, from enslaved laborers to today’s workforce, including over 4 million Black Americans aged 55+ who were still on the job as of 2023.
