Sitting here this morning with a cup of coffee, looking out at the ocean in my favorite place, Charleston, I’m reflecting on a journey that began more than 39 years ago.
I’m so thankful to the brilliant, book-loving ladies who invited me to speak at their book club, and especially to Bambi and Tuan who so generously spent days preparing an incredible Persian meal for me. I was truly humbled by their thoughtfulness and kindness.
For years, people asked me about my journey to America as a 16-year-old boy who left his family behind. I never had the courage to tell it. It wasn’t until my father passed away that I felt ready to write our story—to honor him and my mom, their sacrifices, and the courage it took to let their son leave Iran to save his life and pursue a better future.
When I look at my daughters and all they have accomplished, I feel that I’ve honored the hope my parents had for me.
This morning, I’m simply grateful. Grateful for my journey, my family, the people who have embraced my story, and this life I was given the opportunity to build. ❤️
