Greenville needs a place like this downtown… and what I mean by that is a multi-functional space.
Fancy coffee and baked goods during the day, then brewery/cocktails and casual food in the evening. PLUS activities on specific nights of the week like trivia, karaoke, live music, line dancing, country swing, etc.
People need fun things to DO. We need more opportunities to get out of the house, gather, connect with people and have a good time without having to drive an hour away.
I’m not personally in a position to invest in something like this, but for those who are… I really believe there could be an opportunity here if it was done creatively and strategically.
We all know that businesses can struggle to make it in Greenville because there just isn’t always enough consistent traffic to support them. That’s why I think the multi-functional approach is so important.
A coffee shop on its own has one customer base. A brewery or bar has another. A restaurant has another. A dance hall or entertainment venue has another. Any one of those things might struggle on its own in our market, but if you combine them thoughtfully, you have a much broader customer base and multiple reasons for people to come through the door throughout the day and week.
And it wouldn’t have to mean running four separate businesses under one roof either.
The food could be kept fairly simple so you don’t need some massive restaurant kitchen or a giant menu. Coffee, pastries, sandwiches and simple lunch options during the day, then things like flatbreads, burgers, sandwiches, appetizers and shareable food in the evening. Just good, relatively simple food that works with the concept and gives people a reason to stay.
The key strategy for success would be how the space transitions throughout the day.
During the day it’s the downtown coffee shop that Greenville desperately needs. Somewhere you can meet a friend, work on your laptop, have a meeting, grab coffee and a pastry or have lunch.
After school, it could be a safe place for teenagers to hang out, study and spend time with their friends. You could even have certain trivia nights, games or events specifically geared toward teens.
Then in the early evening it could transition into more of a family atmosphere. Come have dinner, bring the kids, play trivia together, listen to live music, play games, etc.
And later in the evening, it could shift into more of an adult atmosphere with beer and cocktails, karaoke, live music, dancing and date-night type activities.
Obviously the exact setup would depend on alcohol licensing and how all of that would legally need to be structured, but I don’t think serving alcohol at night means the whole place has to function like a “bar.” Different times and different events could be intentionally geared toward different groups. Certain nights could be geared towards adults, while others were geared towards families.
And personally, I LOVE the dancing idea.
You could have a beginner lesson one night a week and then another night that’s just open dancing where everyone can come out, practice and show off what they’ve learned. It’s a fun date night, it’s social, it’s exercise, and dancing together is genuinely such a good way for couples to connect.
And that’s really the whole idea behind this.
Don’t just give people another place to go. Give them reasons to keep coming back.
Trivia every Tuesday. Dance lessons on Wednesdays. Karaoke on Thursdays. Live music on Friday or Saturday. Change things up, have special events, try new ideas and figure out what people actually show up for. Have special events around the holidays like a costume contest for Halloween and an Ugly Sweater Party at Christmas, etc…
I think THAT kind of creativity and consistency is what could give a downtown business like this a real chance in a small town.
I would love for us to have a place where people regularly ask each other, “What are they doing downtown tonight?”
Coffee and pastries in the morning, lunch during the day, a place for teens after school, dinner with the family, drinks with friends, trivia, karaoke, music, dancing, date nights…
It doesn’t have to be just one thing.
Make it fun. Make it functional. Give different people different reasons to come at different times, and most importantly, give them reasons to come back.
Someone who has the means and business experience to do this PLEASE take this idea and run with it. 😂 I would absolutely love to see something like this in downtown Greenville. I’m happy to brainstorm ideas and talk marketing and business strategy AND help you find the perfect space if anyone is interested in doing this.
