The commonly used benchmark for housing affordability is that no more than 30% of household income should go toward housing costs. When housing costs exceed 30% of a household’s income, families are considered “cost burdened”—meaning they have less money available for essentials like food, healthcare, transportation, and savings.

In 2023, 31.3% of American households fell into that category.
