DELAWARE’S SECOND SEASON IS NIGH!
The Friday/Monday traffic on Route 1 might begin to ease, but the First State's summer does not end on Labor Day.
It changes hands.
Southern Delaware Tourism calls the weeks ahead the “Second Season”—and a local favorite. Around the beach towns, some of the locals who love the beach best finally return for their first boardwalk stroll in months.
The water's still warm. The sand is still golden, but the parking spots take a few fewer laps to secure, and you're less likely to back into someone's soft-serve while you contemplate shop-window curios. Of course, some places will soon be cutting their hours again, and maybe you have to wait until the kids are home from school. But it's still a good place to relax and be yourself, and laugh along with the seagulls as they exchange thoughts on the summer's antics overhead.
Before we reclaim the coast, however, we ought to notice what the high season brings. The Delaware Tourism Office's latest complete estimate—2023 data, which take time to assemble—reported a record 29.3 million day and overnight business and leisure visitors, up 2.4% from 2022. They spent more than $7 billion, up 7%. Tourism contributed $4.7 billion to Delaware’s economy, supported 55,240 jobs, and generated $724 million in state and local taxes. Sussex County accounted for about $3 billion in visitor spending and 26,900 tourism-supported jobs.
Those are annual figures, not a summer-only pot of money; the official reports do not isolate a comparable summer total. But DNREC identifies summer as the coast’s visitor peak. Rehoboth Beach’s own 2024 budget makes the change visible: 1,256 full-time residents, more than 25,000 people during the busiest summer periods, and over 3.5 million visitors across the year. That is almost 20 people in town for every year-round resident.
Growth is not imagined, either: statewide visitation rose 2.4% in one year, while trips to Delaware’s entire Delaware State Parks system rose 35% from 2015 to 2024—nearly 2 million additional visits.
Then comes the exhale. Here is some of what remains in 2026:
Funland reopens September 10–13 for one last post-Labor Day weekend. This is also the final chance to ride the current Haunted Mansion: it will be closed in 2027 and reimagined for 2028.
Bethany Beach Events & Entertainment keeps free bandstand concerts going Friday and Saturday evenings through September. Its Boardwalk Arts Festival brings more than 100 juried artists downtown September 12. On September 19, Delawareans can join Delaware DNREC's Coastal Cleanup at more than 45 sites from 9 a.m. to noon—registration closes September 8—then make a day of the Delaware Seafood Festival in Rehoboth.
In Lewes, the Lewes Chamber of Commerce's Boast the Coast offers free canal boat rides, children’s activities, music, and free Cannonball House admission October 3. The next day, the University of Delaware College of Earth, Ocean and Environment's 50th Coast Day 2026 fills the Lewes campus for hands-on science, demonstrations, lab and ship tours. Rehoboth Beach Jazz Festival follows October 15–18, and Rehoboth Beach-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center's Sea Witch Festival takes over Rehoboth and Dewey October 23–25.
The ordinary pleasures may be best. Rehoboth’s paid-parking season ends September 15; limited lifeguard coverage continues through September 20. Leashed dogs may return to its beach and boardwalk September 16. Friends of Cape Henlopen State Park's volunteer-run Bike Barn lends bicycles free for two hours, weather permitting. Trails, fishing, birding, state parks, and the Delaware Seashore State Park's Indian River Life-Saving Station museum carry on beyond summer.
And let's not forget, the place hasn't always been like this.
Delaware Public Archives traces Rehoboth’s start as a Methodist seaside resort to 1873; its boardwalk and rail connection followed in that decade. Bethany Beach began as a Christian campsite in 1901. The Indian River Life-Saving Station, built in 1876, recalls a coast known for danger and rescue: its crews answered more than 60 wrecks and saved 419 lives. The coast has much older Indigenous and maritime histories; it is mass beach tourism that is new.
Maybe that is the Second Season’s real invitation: enjoy the place not simply as a destination, but as home. Walk it. Ride it. Learn its stories. Help clean it. Thank the workers who carried another summer.
The crowds may thin, but Delaware’s coast is not closing.
