Interesting take on history:
I’ve read that before elevators, most city buildings maxed out at 5 stories.

1st floor: was for businesses/shops.
2nd: would be the most desirable appartments (less stairs)
3rd: rent would get cheaper
4th: and cheaper
5th: until the 5th floor was affordable for anyone.

With elevators came taller buildings. And the premium for a pent house suite.

But the bigger change in dynamics (I read) was we lost this situation where different people from all walks of life were living under the same roof. Separated by just a few floors.
