I noticed these two doorknobs at a recent showing and initially thought they were an odd feature that probably didn’t add much security.

Then I learned that the seller’s neurodivergent child had a tendency to leave the home unexpectedly. The second doorknob was installed as an added layer of protection to help keep their child safe.

It was a good reminder that something can look unusual when you don’t know the story behind it. Homes are often adapted in ways that meet the unique needs of the people living there, and sometimes the features that make the least sense at first have the most thoughtful purpose.

Recently, I saw a ceiling fan installed directly above a bathtub. While enjoying a nice breeze during a long soak might sound relaxing, this setup definitely made me pause. 😅

Bathrooms have added moisture and electrical safety concerns, and not every ceiling fan is rated or approved for that environment or location. Clearance, manufacturer instructions, ventilation, and local electrical requirements all matter.

A ceiling fan also does not replace a properly vented exhaust fan, which helps remove moisture from the room.

Home security is important to everyone, but the two chain locks I spotted at a recent showing were a good reminder that two locks do not automatically mean twice the protection. 😅

A few practical ways to improve home security:

🔒 Install a quality deadbolt with long screws securing the strike plate to the door frame
💡 Add motion-activated exterior lighting
📹 Consider a video doorbell or security cameras
🪟 Make sure windows have working locks
🚪 Reinforce sliding doors with a security bar
🌳 Trim landscaping that creates hiding places near entrances
🔑 Change or rekey the locks after moving into a new home
🚨 Consider a monitored alarm system for added protection

Home security works best in layers. Good locks, proper installation, lighting, visibility, and everyday habits matter more than simply adding another chain.

Recently, I helped a friend design their newly constructed deck after they purchased their home. We talked through furniture placement, plants, lighting, and practical décor to make the space comfortable and functional.

Helping someone find a home is rewarding, but I also enjoy seeing how they make it their own after closing. I can’t wait to see this outdoor space come together!

Even when a home has a brand-new HVAC system, it is still important to have it inspected. New does not always mean properly installed.

The outdoor unit should be level, but that is only one part of the system. Electrical connections, refrigerant lines, drainage, airflow, ductwork, and overall operation should also be checked.

A professional inspection can help identify installation issues before they become expensive problems.
