Had to share this picture of some fresh eggs from the girls.

One thing I've learned over 40 years of selling land and many years of homesteading is that the simple things are often the most rewarding. A basket of fresh eggs gathered from your own coop is hard to beat.

If you have ever considered keeping chickens, here are a few things worth knowing:

◽️ Before building a coop, check local zoning ordinances and HOA restrictions. Rules can vary significantly from one property to another.

◽️ Protecting your flock is essential. A well-built coop and secure run help keep chickens safe from raccoons, foxes, hawks, and other predators.

◽️ Most hens begin laying eggs around 5 to 6 months of age and can provide a steady supply for years.

◽️ Fresh water, quality feed, shade, and a clean coop go a long way toward healthy birds and quality eggs.

For those of us who enjoy homestead living, there is a special satisfaction in producing a little of your own food. It's one of the many reasons I continue to appreciate the land I call home.

60 pounds of blueberries in the freezer, plus these. And we're still not halfway through this year's harvest...

If you enjoy blueberries, I highly recommend planting a bush or two.

After more than 40 years helping clients buy and sell land across Upstate South Carolina, I've learned that some of the best rewards come from caring for the land itself. This week's blueberry harvest on my own homestead is a good reminder that patience and stewardship pay off.

Thinking about planting blueberries? Here are a few things to know >>

-- I recommend planting at least two varieties for better pollination and better yields.
-- Blueberries thrive in acidic, well-drained soil.
-- Most bushes begin producing fruit in 2-3 years, with larger harvests after 5 years.
-- Mulch helps conserve moisture and protect shallow roots.
-- Full sun is key to a productive harvest.

Whether you are interested in farming, recreation, or simply enjoying more of what your land can provide, understanding the land starts with living on it.
