It's the first official day of fall. Before you plan your New England vacation, I've got a better idea.

If you're wondering how bold the colors will be this year, the only way to know for certain is to see it for yourself, but it's generally believed that bright, sunny days and cool nights bring out the reds, while an extended heat wave in October makes for a dull and delayed peak.

Now is the time to plan because timing matters. Higher elevations change first. Mountain areas may begin showing strong color in early to mid-October, while Greenville County usually looks best in late October, with downtown color lingering into early November.
