(2/4) "I’ve worked since I was eight [in the restaurant]. I wanted to. When it first opened on Woodruff Road, my dad would bring me on the weekends. I loved cooking, washing dishes… I loved it all. It was the most fun I’d ever had in my life, you know, when I was eight. I’d take chips to the table, or they’d put a stool out so I could charge people out front. And then when I was twelve, I started serving a table or two. In high school and college, though, I started thinking, ‘I’m probably not gonna do this any more. I need to find something else I really like.’”

(1/4) A few weeks ago we sat down with Cesar Reyes, a second generation restaurateur and the manager of Mr. Salsa’s Mexican Restaurant’s newest location at University Square. With us, he shared his father’s story as a first-generation American and entrepreneur, and the surprise of following in his father’s footsteps.

“My dad’s name is Jacinto, but he’s been going by ‘Jack’ ever since he came to the US. He is from Tampico-- that’s the city -- Mexico. It’s a port city. He’s been working since he was probably six years old. Cleaning fish, things like that. He’d always be working. When he came to the US in the 80s, his first few jobs were restaurants. He’s always been in the restaurant industry. He worked at a Sizzler’s Steakhouse and a Shoney’s franchise. But he always wanted to start his own restaurant.

The opportunity came when some of his friends came up with the idea of putting [a restaurant] up on Woodruff Road. They said, ‘You want in? It’s the four of us, and we need one more.’ He said yes.

Three years later, he opened a second location in Taylors. And that’s where we started."
