I had a fledgling in my window sill yesterday! I’m not sure if the type but based on this I’m between mockingbird, sparrow, or robin. Picture in comments!

Grumpy face, a li’l scruffy, standing or hopping and fully feathered? Yup, that’s a fledgling. Unless they’re injured or in danger, you can usually let them be.

A fledgling is a bird who’s just left the nest. They don’t fly much at first, but this is normal. If they can stand or hop and are covered in feathers, they’re likely fine. Their parents are usually nearby foraging for food to feed them. If you’re not sure, wait and watch from a distance to see if the parents show up.

If a fledgling is in a road or other dangerous spot, it’s OK to move them to a safer place nearby but only a few feet away! A fledgling is still dependent on their parents, and the parents must be able to find them.

Every summer, we admit many dozens of healthy fledglings who were rescued by mistake. Their rescuers certainly meant well, but the consequences for that bird (not being raised for their parents) and for us (many more birds in care unnecessarily) are steep. Whenever possible, we ask the rescuers to return them where they found them and wait to see if the parents return.

**Note: Pigeons are the exception. Pigeons stay in the nest a long 4 weeks and look almost like adults when they fledge. Usually if a pigeon looks too young to be out of the nest (short wings, short tail, fuzzy head), they are.**

If you’re not sure, send us a photo or contact your local wildlife rehabber.

Your donations feed a lot of babies and fledglings this time of year! Please consider helping: 🔗 bit.ly/wbfdonate

Hi There! I’m Autumn Dudley Bible. I’ve been a licensed Realtor in South Carolina since late 2014! I help people find homes in Greenville, Spartanburg, Pickens, and Anderson counties! What I really love about real estate is helping people find home. Sometimes that’s up-sizing, sometimes that’s downsizing, and sometimes that’s helping someone find the very first home they can call their own. I graduated from the University of South Carolina Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism. I worked in local news for a few years but now I use my video and writing skills to market my clients’ homes for sale.

I was born and raised in Upstate South Carolina. I LOVE telling people about living here! Telling them where to get a great dinner, where to find a special gift, or how to beat traffic!

As for me personally, I love old houses, old places, Disney and music. My dream house is a Victorian oozing with character! My perfect vacation is exploring an old city, learning about its history and culture. (I did minor in anthropology for the heck of it.) My favorite holiday is Halloween because it’s otherworldly and whimsical. Spending time with my family is what makes me the happiest. Also, I’ve had pets since I was a child and I cannot imagine life without a furry friend. I absolutely love meeting pets when showing homes! I have served on the board of PFLAG Anderson since 2023.

I’d love to help you find home!

SC Forestry Commission to issue statewide burning ban, effective at 4 p.m. today

COLUMBIA—The South Carolina Forestry Commission is issuing a State Forester’s Burning Ban for all counties, effective at 4 p.m. today.

A State Forester’s Burning Ban prohibits all outdoor burning, including yard debris burning, prescribed burning, campfires, bonfires and other recreational fires in all unincorporated areas of the state.

The ban does not apply to fires used for the preparation of food or fires used in appropriate enclosures (portable outdoor fireplaces, chimineas or permanent fire pits constructed of stone, masonry, metal or other noncombustible material that conforms with all applicable South Carolina fire codes).

Forestry Commission officials say weather conditions over the next several days present a greatly elevated potential for fires igniting easily and spreading rapidly. Dangerously low relative humidities – reaching below 20% in some areas – combined with extremely dry fuels statewide and gusty winds will create a particularly volatile mix of wildfire risk factors throughout the weekend.

"In addition to the intensifying drought conditions, the weather we’re going to see statewide over the next several days makes it ripe for any fire that starts to burn intensely and move fast,” SCFC Fire Chief Darryl Jones said. "While these conditions can make wildfires ignite easily anywhere and make it more challenging for firefighters to contain, we’re really concerned about areas where events like Hurricane Helene and recent ice damage have led to higher amounts of fuel. This burning ban is necessary to limit ignitions to the maximum extent possible to prevent severe wildfires for public safety purposes."

The ban will stay in effect until further notice, which will come in the form of an official announcement from the Forestry Commission.
