Did you know... Monaghan Mill used to have its very own baseball team? This photo is from the 1913-1914 season, over 100 years ago! Mill communities were built to include everything a family may need within walking distance - from schools to grocery stores to leisurely activities like baseball! Can you imagine what Greenville would be like if everyone had easy access to the things they need in day-to-day life, without a car?!

My name is Julia Rayfield, and I am the new summer intern at GRC! I am a rising senior at Furman University and am studying Math and Economics with a minor in Environmental Studies. I also traveled abroad to Copenhagen, Denmark where I was additionally able to study sustainability in the context of urban design and development. At Furman, I am an Eco Representative, a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, and treasurer of PHOKUS (Furman’s health education group). I am excited to be able to apply my knowledge of economics, math, and sustainability at GRC and to witness first-hand the ex*****on of community development through a non-profit lens!

Did you know that the textile crescent area of Greenville is a food, recreational, and medical desert? This means that there is limited access to fresh food, community spaces, and healthcare options within walking distance of the town center. We are proud to be the only organization in Greenville that focuses on the economic development in the textile crescent - the geographical region whose mill communities put our town on the map. We are currently working to pour into the existing residents that have served the area for generations through revitalization rather than gentrification.

This weekend, we have the opportunity to join the Greenville Textile Heritage Society to honor 6 members of the society for their exceptional sports achievements throughout the years.

Multi-season baseball all-star Jake Lyles was a member of the Dunean Dynamos championship team in 1953 and eventually drafted to the Baltimore Orioles. In addition to his successful career in baseball, Lyles also served in the Korean War and sat on the Greenville County School Board for 8 years.

Help us salute this Greenville legend this Saturday, April 30th, from 10-4 at the Greenville Textile Heritage Park!.
