Project Spotlight: FFX Solar Farm—Lorton, VA 🔭

Fairfax County is making major strides in renewable energy with its largest solar project to date, a 5-megawatt solar array being constructed at the I-95 Landfill Complex in Lorton, VA. Set across 37 acres of a closed landfill, this project is the first of its kind in Virginia and is expected to power approximately 1,000 homes while saving the county an estimated $12 million over the next 30 years.

Armstrong Civil is proud to be supporting this groundbreaking project by performing the construction stakeouts and the as-built surveys.

Originally brought in to troubleshoot early staking and lidar topo issues, Armstrong quickly became a trusted partner and is now leading the surveying efforts for this site, as well as additional solar projects in Gretna, VA.

Armstrong & Associates completed the stakeout needed for the walls for units on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors at Dan River Falls. So, you may be wondering, why is that so important? 🏢

A stakeout survey for walls is conducted to precisely mark the location where walls should be built on a construction site, ensuring they are positioned correctly according to the building plans, preventing potential encroachments on property lines, and avoiding costly mistakes by clearly indicating the exact placement of the walls before construction begins. A few crew members visited Christiansburg, VA yesterday, setting limits of disturbance and ground control for Haymes Brothers! 🔭

A “setting limits of disturbance survey” refers to a surveying process that defines the precise boundary within which construction activities, including grading, excavation, and landscaping, are permitted to occur on a development site, essentially marking the area that will be disturbed during the project and delineating the areas that need to be protected from disruption, also known as a “Limit of Disturbance (LOD)” survey. 🚜

Armstrong & Associates Inc. celebrated 13 years this week! 🎉

To begin this business, Rich bought a 30-year-old total station and secondhand rods, prisms, a tripod, a laptop, and Carlson software. He set up a little desk in the basement of their house in Fort Hill. Our small business began with just one customer, Haymes Brothers. On days when Rich didn’t have fieldwork, he knocked on realtors, lawyers, contractors, and engineers’ doors to let them know we were there to serve them. Little by little, the company gained some traction with a job here and a job there, and the community began to hire us.

Fast forward, Donald and Marie Young rented us office space in the back of their building on Main Street in Gretna, Virginia. Around 2015 we began to work for Reynolds Clark and Blair Construction and then brought on Larry Meeler, formerly of Piedmont Surveying in Danville. This resulted in major growth for us. Along the way, we worked for Sellers Brothers, Crews Construction, VA Carolina Paving, Yates Homes, and many others.

In 2019 we bought a few buildings on Main Street that shortly became our home office. We built apartments above our office and behind it. Armstrong & Associates hit a slow patch. Beth and Rich were praying for an answered prayer, which we shortly received. Mark Johnson, who owned LE&D, a surveying and engineering outfit in Danville, VA, needed someone to do his survey work. It has been a tremendous relationship, and we have continued to serve them for the last five years.

From Rich’s basement to the 3 locations and 28 team members, we can see God’s hand the whole way. It’s an honor to still be serving Haymes Brothers, Blair Construction, and many of those early clients to this day. Thank you for giving us a chance and letting us serve you. ❤️

The famous 3 smokestacks at ! 🕌

The first established reference point with a known elevation in a particular area that serves as the foundation for measuring all other elevations within that survey area is referred to as the “original benchmark” in surveying; in other words, it serves as the baseline for calculating vertical measurements and is the main benchmark from which other benchmarks are derived.

After visiting , Armstrong & Associates headed to ! 🦦This project is still under construction, but many, if not all, of the lofts are complete and now leasing! We can’t wait to see the commercial units next. Ricky Watlington, Jason Kelly, Josh Kelly, Daniel Wallace, and Isaac Hudson also helped complete the construction stakeout, consisting of:

1. Curbs and Gutters
2. Stakeout for the walls for units for floors 2-4
3. Sidewalks
4. Light Poles
5. Control set for the site
6. Benchmarks
7. Sidewalks/ADA-approved concrete
8. Storm structures and associated boxes

There’s no other view like Dan River Falls’! Can you imagine living with a continuous view like this? 🏞️ We had a blast working on this project, and again, we are more than honored to have played such a huge role on this site! Stay tuned for the completion of the commercial suites!

Armstrong & Associates gathered the “Caesars Crew” and headed onsite to see the finished product. ⭐️ Ricky Watlington, Jason Kelly, Josh Kelly, Daniel Wallace, and Isaac Hudson spent many, many days onsite during the construction of Caesars Virginia. Here’s a summary of the construction stakeout completed:

3. Hotel Floors (Column lines for the hotel and elevator.)
4. Casino Floors (Column lines for the casino points for gaming tables.)
5. Garage Deck
