🌿 There is a river in Baldwin County, Alabama where the United States Mail is still delivered by boat. Not as a tourist attraction, not as a historical reenactment, not as a novelty — but as the actual, functioning, daily mail delivery system for the homes and properties along the Magnolia River that have no road access from the water side. The mail boat has been making this run for over a century. The river hasn't changed much. The oak canopy closes over the water the same way it always has.
Magnolia Springs is one of the most quietly extraordinary communities on the Alabama Gulf Coast — a small, historic town set along the Magnolia River in Baldwin County, about fifteen miles north of Gulf Shores, where the live oak canopy is so dense over the main road that it creates a tunnel of green shade in summer and a cathedral of bare branches in winter. The river mail delivery route that serves the community is the last remaining boat mail route in the continental United States — a distinction that has brought occasional national media attention but has done remarkably little to change the pace or character of a place that seems genuinely uninterested in being discovered. The azaleas bloom in spring. The river runs dark and slow. The mail comes by boat.
