Beach Day Basics: Jellyfish Stings

A jellyfish sting can ruin a beach day fast, but knowing what to do helps. If someone is stung, carefully remove any visible tentacles, then rinse or soak the area with hot water if available. Hot water is commonly recommended because it can help ease the pain. Watch closely for any serious reaction like trouble breathing, widespread swelling, or severe pain.

To help avoid stings, pay attention to beach flags, warning signs, and local conditions before getting in the water. It is also smart to ask lifeguards or local beach staff if jellyfish have been active that day. CDC travel safety guidance specifically recommends asking about local sea animals and following local official guidance before water activities.

If a sting does happen, do not panic. Gently remove tentacles with tweezers if you can, avoid rubbing the area, and use hot water that is warm enough to help but not hot enough to burn. Mayo Clinic says hot water around 110–113°F may help with pain, often for 20–45 minutes.

Most stings improve with basic care, but get medical help right away if there is trouble breathing, signs of shock, or a severe reaction.
