The City of Foley is taking the next step toward a new Aquatics Center at Max Griffin Park, with construction expected to begin before the end of the year following the completion of final plans and the bidding process.
The new facility will provide year-round opportunities for recreation, swim lessons, therapy programs, and competitive swimming, building on the legacy of the city's outdoor pool, which has served the community since 1953.
Mayor Ralph Hellmich said the project will better meet the needs of Foley residents and the city's growing aquatics programs.
"We're going from a Memorial Day to the start of school facility to a year-round center that more meets the needs of our citizens. It's time we had this in Foley."
The Aquatics Center will feature both a competition pool and a therapy pool, a design requested by residents during the planning process. The current outdoor pool will remain open throughout construction, and once the new facility opens, the existing pool site may be repurposed for future community amenities such as a splash pad or pavilion.
As participation in Foley's swim programs continues to grow, the new Aquatics Center will expand opportunities for swimmers of all ages for decades to come.
