🍂 Bergen County, before you turn on the heat this fall, check these 5 things.

Fall is officially here, and colder weather will be here before we know it.

Most of us don't think about our heating systems, smoke detectors, or emergency supplies until something goes wrong.
But a few minutes of preparation today could make a big difference when temperatures drop.

🏠 YOUR FALL APARTMENT SAFETY CHECKLIST
✅ Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Replace batteries if needed. Don't wait until they start chirping in the middle of the night!
✅ Check your carbon monoxide detector's expiration date. These devices don't last forever. Check the back of your detector or the manufacturer's instructions to see when yours needs replacing.
✅ Check your windows and heating system. Notice a draft? Is your heat not working properly? Notify your landlord IN WRITING now, before colder weather arrives.
Important for NJ renters: Heating requirements generally begin October 1. Don't wait until your apartment is freezing to report a problem.
✅ Refresh your emergency kit. Check your flashlights, batteries, medications, bottled water, and nonperishable food. Make sure important phone numbers are written down somewhere accessible.
✅ Know who to call if your heat stops working. Save your landlord's emergency maintenance number and your utility provider's emergency contact information.

Qualified low-to-moderate-income Bergen County homeowners and condominium owners may be eligible for an interest-free loan with no monthly payments to make qualifying improvements to their homes. Eligibility depends on factors including income, household size, financial status, and the type of improvement needed.

The most important thing in your emergency kit isn't something you can buy.

It's a neighbor. 💙

Before the next storm knocks out the power, before temperatures drop, before an emergency happens, ask yourself one question:

Who on your block would you check on first?

Not “someone in the neighborhood.”
�One specific person.

Maybe it's the older gentleman who lives alone.

The neighbor who uses a wheelchair.

The family with a newborn.

The woman whose lights you notice are always on when you leave for work.

Or maybe it's the person next door whose name you still don't know.

This September, during National Preparedness Month, HDC is challenging Bergen County residents to make a simple Neighbor Plan:

✅ Choose one neighbor you will check on during an emergency.
✅ Agree to contact each other within the first hour of a power outage or emergency.
✅ Write their phone number on paper, not just in your phone. A dead battery shouldn't disconnect you.
✅ Know whether they live alone, have mobility limitations, or rely on medical equipment that requires electricity.
✅ Don't know your neighbors yet? This week is a good time to change that.

Bergen County has 70 municipalities, but when an emergency happens, one of your most important resources may be living 20 feet away.

Labor Day is about more than a day off.

It's about whether the people who clean the buildings, staff the hospitals, teach the children, drive the buses, and build the homes of Bergen County can actually afford to live here.

In Bergen County, where the median home sale price reached $851,000 in early 2026 and the average commute is 34 minutes each way, that question has a harder answer every year.

Workers deserve more than a long commute from the only neighborhood they can afford. They deserve a home close to the community they serve.

That is why HDC exists. Not just to build housing, but to help ensure Bergen County remains a place where working families can put down roots.

⚠️ Carbon Monoxide: Would You Know What to Do?

Carbon monoxide is colorless, odorless, and potentially deadly. Even more concerning, the early symptoms can feel a lot like the flu: headache, dizziness, weakness, nausea, and fatigue.

For apartment residents and families throughout Bergen County, knowing the warning signs and what to do next could save a life.

🚨 One important clue:
If several people in your home suddenly develop similar flu-like symptoms, or symptoms seem to improve after leaving the home, carbon monoxide could be the cause. Don't wait to investigate it yourself.

If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds:

➡️ Get everyone outside immediately.
➡️ Once you're safely outside, call 911.
➡️ PSE&G customers can also call the 24-hour Gas Emergency Line at 1-800-880-7734.

Never use these indoors:

❌ Charcoal or gas grills
❌ Portable generators
❌ Gas ovens or ranges to heat your home
❌ Other fuel-burning equipment not designed for indoor use

🏠 What about your CO detector?

New Jersey requires carbon monoxide alarms in many residential buildings with fuel-burning appliances or attached garages, including alarms near sleeping areas in covered multiple dwellings.

Take a few minutes today to:

✅ Test your CO alarms
✅ Check the manufacturer's replacement or expiration date
✅ Make sure everyone in your household recognizes the alarm
✅ Have a plan to get everyone outside quickly

If an alarm is missing or not working in your rental, notify your landlord or property manager promptly.

Carbon monoxide doesn't give you the benefit of seeing or smelling the danger first. Preparation is your warning system.

NJ Tenant Rights: What Your Landlord Cannot Legally Do 🏠

Most renters don’t start researching their rights until something has already gone wrong.

But knowing what your landlord can and cannot legally do before there’s a problem can make a big difference.

If you rent in Bergen County, here are a few protections every tenant should know:

🔑 Your landlord cannot simply lock you out.
A landlord cannot remove you from your home without following New Jersey’s legal eviction process. Changing locks or shutting off utilities to force a tenant out is not a legal substitute for eviction.

🔥 Your landlord has a responsibility to provide a habitable home.
That includes maintaining essential services and addressing conditions that affect health and safety. New Jersey also establishes minimum heating requirements during the heating season.

🔧 Serious repairs cannot simply be ignored.
Tenants have remedies when necessary repairs affecting habitability are not addressed. Because withholding rent carries legal risk, tenants should understand the requirements and consider seeking legal guidance before doing so.

💰 There are rules for your security deposit.
Generally, after a tenancy ends, a landlord has 30 days to return the security deposit plus applicable interest, less lawful deductions, along with an itemized accounting of deductions.

📣 Your landlord cannot retaliate against you for exercising protected rights.
Tenants have protections when making good-faith complaints about housing conditions or reporting potential violations.

⚖️ And if you're dealing with a housing problem, you don't necessarily have to figure it out alone.
