There’s always a point every year when I realize summer has officially arrived. Not because the calendar says so, but because I start noticing all the little things.
The winter coats (finally) get put away. The flip flops make their way to the coat closet. I switch the wreath on the front door and start pulling out all of my favorite summer serving pieces again.
Before long, the hydrangeas will be blooming, there will be pool towels draped over every chair in the house, and my kids will be running through every sprinkler they can find.
I think homes feel different in the summer. At least mine does. It's happier. It's more relaxed. And it's the time of year I love entertaining the most.
For me, making our home feel like summer isn't about doing anything dramatic. It's the little things, a refreshed front porch, fresh flowers on the counter, lanterns glowing outside at dusk, and creating outdoor spaces where people want to stay a little longer.
These are a few of the simple things I do every year to welcome summer home.
