On April 8, 2024, Western New York will experience a total solar eclipse. “Our goal right now is just to get the word out there, because this will be incredible,” said Michael Humphrey, president of the Buffalo Astronomical Association.

The next few days are the peak of the Geminid meteor shower! 🌠

Look for shooting stars over the next few nights as the Earth plows through debris left in space by a rocky comet! The peak is officially on the 14th but it should be pretty good for a couple nights before and after, too. Meteors can be seen in any area of the sky but will all look as though they were coming from the direction of the Gemini constellation, which gives this meteor shower its name! ♊️

The bright moon is still a bit in the way, making it hard to see the fainter meteors, so I suggest going out to see the meteors on the 15th or 16th when there'll be more hours of darkness before the moon rises! 🌖

An interesting addition to the Great Lakes!

Residents of Angola and Hamburg may have noticed a cruise ship offshore in Lake Erie this afternoon. The ship, named 'Le Bellot', is a luxury cruise liner operated by Ponant, a French company based in Marseille.

The Le Bellot is waiting offshore while waiting for more favorable weather before entering the Welland Canal, where she will subsequently proceed to Toronto to pick up passengers.
