IF you have water infiltrating your home from an ice dam. It may help to get a bucket and drill a small hole that can drain into the bucket so the water has somewhere to go rather than where ever it finds a path!
Also the best professional to call for this problem, at least at the onset is a roofer They can attend to the source of the problem after using steam to melt the ice and then can make the necessary repair.
If not, no need to drill unnecessary holes in your ceilings:))
