I almost forgot to post my Sunday Home Security Tip. Since it's dark outside, I'm going to cover exterior lighting.

Keeping the lights on ALL night can get expensive. Motion sensing exterior lights have been around for a long time now and are reasonably priced. Many of them, especially those placed along driveways and walkways, are solar powered. Having a light flick on as you approach a house gives one the impression that someone is home and watching. Or, for those who like to lurk in the shadows, it deletes their hiding space.

If you are sitting at home and notice a light come on outside it can alert you that something is moving nearby

Even if you are the type who keeps their outside lights on all night, take a look at the areas of your home at night that aren't illuminated by those lights and consider placing motion sensing lights (most homes have lights on the front but not the sides).

Following up on last week's Sunday Safety Tip (gravel), we're talking about shrubs and bushes. If you've ever tried sneaking out or back in your house as a teen, you know climbing through a bush is a real pain. Your feet get tangled up in the branches causing you to stumble and the branches go up your pant legs and cut up your legs.

Planting shrubs or bushes (the pricklier the better) under a window makes it a difficult and more unpleasant experience for someone who is trying to peak through the window or gain access to your house through the window. Assuming you keep up your yard maintenance, shrubs and bushes can beautify your home as well. Rose bushes have nice thorns and bloom in the warm months. In the fall their stalks get stiff and extra pokey. Evergreen shrubs are low maintenance aside from occasional trimming if you lack a green thumb.

I’m starting a series of “Sunday Security Tips” where each week I’ll post a different, budget friendly tip you can use to help harden your home.

This week’s tip enhances your homes curb appeal while making it less appealing to criminals. Gravel.

Gravel is inexpensive, great for landscaping and most importantly, NOISY when walked on.

Putting an 18-24” border of gravel around your home makes it difficult for someone to creep around in the shadows of your house without making noise.

I like 1-3” round stones at a depth of 2-3” for this since they don’t pack down. Crushed stone around the same size works well too. Avoid pea gravel, large river rock, and rock with sand mixed in.

This is a fairly simple and inexpensive solution that can be done on a weekend.
