Someone asked me the other day, “Why do you still feel so hurt when it’s been so long?” I replied, “You know when you break a bone or tear a ligament, and after it heals, it still bothers you from time to time? It’s because it never quite heals and goes back to normal. Those bones and those ligaments will never be how they once were.”

That’s exactly what emotional pain does to the heart and soul. People think that just because time has passed, you should be over it — but healing doesn’t follow a clock. Sometimes, it’s not the person you miss, it’s the version of yourself that existed before the pain. The one who still believed in love without fear, who still trusted easily, who still had hope that things would last forever.

Healing changes you. You learn to smile again, but it’s a different kind of smile — one that hides a story behind it. You learn to love again, but you do it carefully, because you remember what it felt like to give your all and be left empty. You move forward, yes, but a part of you still carries the echo of what once was.

So when people ask why it still hurts, I tell them it’s not pain I’m feeling anymore — it’s memory. It’s the quiet reminder of something that mattered deeply, something that left a mark too real to fade. I’m not hurt anymore, it’s just my soul isn’t feeling how it used to.
