Registration is open for the Spring 2024 Healthy Virginia Lawns & Landscapes Program, which provides a soil test and assessment for residents looking to improve the quality of their yards. The program, offered through the Hampton-based Virginia Cooperative Extension, costs $30 for the soil test. To register for an appointment, send an email to [email protected]. Deadline to apply is March 1.
Why do this you ask? Our area is a watershed into the Chesapeake Bay and James and Elizabeth Rivers. Adding only what nutrients your lawn needs can reduce the amount of excess nutrients from running off into the Bay. Nitrogen is especially damaging in the spring as it causes algae blooms that reduce the amount of oxygen in the water.
Pick up your free test kit at our local Virginia Cooperative Extension Service office at 1919 Commerce Drive, Suite 340.
http://offices.ext.vt.edu/hampton The fee for a soil sample test alone is $10 and the kit includes instructions on how to take the sample.

My grandparents met at the carousel at Buckroe Amusement Park where Grandma was a ticket taker. Grandad said it took him a whole roll of nickles to work up the courage to ask her for a date. Back then for an airman on his way to Germany two dollars was a week's pay.
