Ah, June! Early days of summer filled with sunshine. Vacation planning, daydreaming, cookouts, and – of course – great summer treats.

What says early summer better than strawberries? When local watermelon isn’t quite ready strawberries step up to add sweetness to life.

While you may not be able to enjoy our lowcountry strawberry festivals (this year!) we are more than happy to share some great strawberry recipes, starting with strawberry pie. Granted, peak strawberry time in the lowcountry is April and May but we know that those of you in northern climes look to June for your fresh picked strawberries and we’re here to help.

There’s much more to strawberries than pie and shortcake though. South Carolina Innkeepers offer up creative strawberry concoctions such as: strawberry soup, strawberry bread with strawberry butter, and more. Find the recipes here.

How about making your own strawberry jam, lowcountry style? It’s easier than you think with a surprising kiss of Grand Marnier to give it a special twist.

Experience the Rich History of the Lowcountry

If you are a history buff, you owe it to yourself to explore the Lowcountry. The communities surrounding Hilton Head Lakes are rich in culture, traditions, and history going back to before the birth of our nation.

From the Spanish explores of the 1500s to the early settlements and villages of the Yamassee tribes up until the early 1700s in what is now Bluffton, the area has been valued as a great place to live. The Civil War didn’t ignore the area either, within one year of the capture of Fort Sumter, Bluffton became a safe haven for residents fleeing Union occupation. Bluffton was also a headquarters for Confederate forces. Union forces on Hilton Head Island ordered the town’s destruction in 1863. Approximately 60 structures were in the town before the attack. Only the town’s two churches and fifteen residences remained standing after the attack.

The rich heritage of the Gullah/Geechee is woven into the area as well, just waiting for you to explore. Isolated on South Carolina's Sea Islands for generations, the Gullah/Geechee preserved more of their heritage than any other African-American community in the United States. Today, native islanders are still serving up flavorful Gullah dishes, weaving baskets from sweetgrass and sharing their heritage in tours, galleries and museums.

The Best of Lowcountry Cooking

One of the great things about living at Hilton Head Lakes is the area’s amazing food.

Of course, you can’t start to talk about Lowcountry South Carolina food without talking about shrimp and grits. Undoubtedly one of South Carolina's most iconic dishes, shrimp and grits, still a budget-friendly Lowcountry staple in many homes, has become a menu darling across the state. Starting with sweet, wild-caught South Carolina shrimp, chefs spin the recipe in countless ways. With easy access to a multitude of fine dining and down home restaurants, living at Hilton Head Lakes lets you try many variations of shrimp and grits.

Want to try your hand at Lowcountry cooking? The website AllRecipes has a whole section dedicated to the Best of Lowcountry Cooking; from shrimp and grits to Frogmore Stew (don’t worry it doesn’t actually contain frogs) and gumbo you’ll find lots of ways to treat your family to some Lowcountry love.

But what is the Lowcountry? Southern Living magazine dubs it a “dreamy land of live oaks and Spanish moss” that you must put on your bucket list. Generally the Lowcountry is defined as four counties in South Carolina: Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton. Bounded by the Atlantic on one side and the Savannah River on the other, the Lowcountry is one watery place, and the marshlands and sea islands that buffer the mainland coast from the throes of the Atlantic make for the kind of vistas that will have you taking pictures of everything and make your northern friends jealous.
