We took some heat for how we installed the siding on this house. Enough that we went to James Hardie’s team in Chicago to walk through exactly what we did.

Their answer: no issue. When the joints are caulked, primed, and painted correctly, water is not getting in. That sequence matters more than most people realize. Skip any one of those steps and you have a problem. Do all three and you have a siding system that holds.

There are a lot of right ways to do siding, and people in this industry will argue about every single one of them. We will always go back to the source when we have a question, and we are not going to second guess the manufacturer’s own team.

We had comments asking where the glass was. It’s here now, and the whole room reads completely different.

The cast iron freestanding tub is the centerpiece, with a fixture hung directly above it. His and her vanities run along the opposite wall, each with double sconces next to the mirrors. Black Delta fixtures throughout, tile backsplash in the shower, and the frameless glass enclosure that everyone was waiting on.

Cast iron is the detail worth knowing. It is heavier than a standard acrylic tub, which means the subfloor has to be planned for it from the beginning. But it holds heat better, it has a solidity to it that you feel the moment you step in, and it reads as furniture rather than just a fixture.

This one came together exactly the way it was supposed to.

Beth’s rule on kitchen cabinets is simple: take them all the way to the ceiling, every time.
Going to the ceiling gives you a cleaner sight line top to bottom and more cabinet space than most people expect until they actually start filling it.

The finish on the hinge and the finish on the door k**b were close. Just not close enough for Beth.

So she had two options: live with a slight mismatch nobody else in the world would notice, or swap to hinges that matched and add $40 per door to the budget. Per door. In a house with a lot of doors.

When your wife is also your designer, that conversation goes one specific way.

This home is built by the river and every decision started there. The exterior has a heavy lodge feel because that is what the site calls for. Dark finishes, woodsy details, something that looks like it belongs right where it sits.

Step inside and it shifts entirely. Bright rooms, airy finishes, nothing that competes with the views.

That is the design challenge with any site this strong: the home should feel like it grew there, but the inside still has to function as a home, not a set piece. Getting both to coexist is what makes a location like this so interesting to design around.

The topography on this site runs like a river basin, steep drops, natural grade changes, the kind of land most builders would fight against. We built with it instead.

We cut a road up the back side of the property so the upper level has its own separate entry point. That gave us two apartments on top with real privacy and real access, no shared entry, no awkward workaround.

The front of the lodge is where we generated all the motor court space. That is how we got the eight car garage in without it taking over the site. The garage sits into the grade rather than sitting on top of it.

When the land feels like the mountains, you build like you are in them.

The decorative cutouts in these pantry cabinets go back to the 1700s. Back then a bread cabinet or pie safe needed ventilation. Without it, baked goods would spoil. The cutout pattern let air move through while keeping pests out.

That is the whole origin. Practical problem, simple fix, and the shape of the fix became the design.

Now clients are requesting them again, in pantry cabinets, bootroom cabinets, anywhere there is a door that could carry a little character. The function is mostly gone. The look has stayed.

If you are thinking about building and want to talk through cabinet details like this one, we are always happy to answer questions.

The panel work on this porch came straight from the homeowner. She had a vision for how she wanted it to read, and Brian called it a throwback, a little more classy than what you typically see on a screen porch.

One thing worth knowing: because this deck sits less than 30 inches off the ground, it does not require a railing by code. That detail actually opens up your design options. You are not working around a rail system, so the panel layout can run exactly the way you want it to.

It still needs paint and finish work, but even before that it already reads differently than every other screen porch we have built. That is what happens when a homeowner brings a real idea to the table instead of picking from a list.

This is a place built around what a summer is supposed to feel like. Water out front, room to spread out, somewhere to land when the whole family shows up at once. We built this lodge for a family who knew exactly what they wanted and gave us the space to build it right. If you are thinking about building on the water in the CSRA, we would love to talk about what that looks like.

We put a lot of thought into every light in this house, and there are quite a few of them. But this Visual Comfort piece stopped me the moment I saw it.

Sometimes a room has a natural center, a place the eye wants to land. When you find the right fixture for that spot, it earns its price by making everything around it look more intentional. When you settle for something close, the room tells on you.

This one is my favorite thing in the house. I blew the budget on it and I would do it again.
