💰 Own a small meat shop or butcher in the 717? Pennsylvania has up to $100,000 for you, and applications are open now.

What just happened
The state gave $600K to 10 small meat processors across Pennsylvania this week. In York County, Cabin Hollow Butcher Shop got $71,673 and DeTraglia Farm got $61,277.

Now it’s our turn. A new round of $500,000 is open until November 6, 2026 at 5 PM.

✅ Who can apply
• Very small meat or poultry processors
• You must be USDA-inspected, or commit to becoming USDA-inspected after the project
• Beef, pork, lamb, goat, poultry and more

🛠️ What it pays for
• New processing equipment (the state covers 85% and you pay 15%)
• Staff training and safety equipment
• Consulting and technical help
❌ It does NOT pay for wages or building work

💵 How the money works
• Up to $100,000 per business
• It’s a reimbursement: you pay first, then the state pays you back

📝 How to apply
1️⃣ Go to grants.pa.gov (the “Electronic Single Application”)
2️⃣ Search for “Very Small Meat and Poultry Processor Reimbursement Grant”
3️⃣ Upload your project plan, budget and equipment list
4️⃣ Submit before Nov. 6 at 5 PM

How to spend a day in Harrisburg without ever getting bored 👇

🏝️ Start on City Island. It's a 63-acre island in the middle of the Susquehanna. Play 18 holes at Water Golf with the river all around you.

🍹 Get drinks on the "concrete beach." Harrisburg Beach Club turned a century-old bathhouse into a riverside bar with live music.

⚾ Catch a Senators game at FNB Field and find the Life-Size Bobblehead Hall of Fame. (Season's over, so save this for April!)

🌉 Walk back over "Old Shaky." Cross the Walnut Street Bridge after dark with downtown lit up in front of you.

🌮 Have dinner and stay downtown. Eat at El Sol on South 3rd, then check in at the Crowne Plaza on 2nd, steps from Restaurant Row.

🥐 Next morning, get breakfast at Broad Street Market, which has been feeding Harrisburg since 1860. It's open Thursday through Saturday from its tent at 3rd & Verbeke.

📚 Get lost in 200,000+ books at Midtown Scholar, inside a restored 1920s theater.

🎨 Take the long way home past the murals. Sprocket Mural Works alone has painted 50+ of them across the city.

In 1910, postcards called it the “Largest Silk Mill in the World,” and it was in Lancaster. 🧵

In 1897, the Swiss silk company Stehli & Co. needed a mill in America. Lancaster beat out other towns with free land, lower taxes and 600,000 free bricks. What went up was a mill 883 feet long.

At its peak, more than 2,100 people worked there. That was more than half of Stehli’s workers worldwide. A whole neighborhood of rowhomes grew up within sight of the smokestack.

Then nylon arrived. The mill closed in 1954, RCA used it until 1973, and after that it mostly sat empty for decades behind broken windows. Plan after plan to save it fell through.

Today, 165 apartments sit inside those old walls, and the giant factory windows are still there. 🏭➡️🏡
