Who wants a laugh?!? Yesterday I did an open house for one of my listings. My friends, the sellers, were out of town for a few days to allow for as many showings as possible. Which is great! They did let me know their cat would be there, but that he was scared of people and would go hide. Ok, great. Sooo let’s get to the part where I come into the house hands full of beverages, snacks and flowers. Unlock the door and lo and behold there is the cat. Mind you, I have been there multiple times and have never seen said cat. Also… I should preface, I’m a little afraid of cats. 😬 So in my nicest surprised voice I say, “oh hi kitty!! It’s ok, you can go hide now.” No such luck… he did that arched back thing, and did this low growl that let me know he was not ok with this stranger being in the house. Good start. So I was like… ok just ignore him, you have potential buyers showing up in a little bit, you gotta just act like you own the place, walk past the cat and get setting up. He will surely go hide, right? Nope. He did not go hide. He followed me, and continued with his low growl, ears back thing. So I thought, I just needed to get down and let him sniff me and then for sure he will be cool, right?? Ha… nah. Sunny, thats his name, gave me a cute little hiss because I had not yet received the message he was trying to convey. So I decided to keep moving, ignore the cat, and he will ignore you! I tried to stay positive and keep going but fear had set in… I was now sweating profusely. Im sure he smelled my fear, because as soon as I reached for the refrigerator and went to put some cans in the fridge he pounced on my legs!!! Claws. In. My. Legs. Thank the Lord I had a long dress on. I hollered “NO” in a stern voice and he backed up but gave me the growl right back. So I thought ok… what am I going to do?! Sit on the porch for the whole open house, let people in and say, “good luck!” I cannot do this! I am a professional!! So I thought about what I would offer a dog, I’m a dog person. So I said something like, “do you want a treat, or food?” And he immediately went to the pantry. And I thought… BINGO! So as I’m reaching for the pantry door he’s still thinking about challenging me, he’s pacing and blocking me from entering the mud room. But I managed to open the door while keeping my body behind the line he was clearly drawing. I then saw the bag of food!! And I reached for it… I gave it a little happy shake shake, thinking it would make Sunny happy!! Think again! That thing swatted that bag right out of my hands!! I kid you not. “Dude, I don’t know what you want from me?!” I was now pleading with the cat. Then behind where the dry food was I saw the wet food. I quickly snagged a can and he started to purrr. Thank you, Lord!! I open it and he gently lapped it up giving me 5 minutes to finish setting up. After he finished, he went to the door and stood there like he wanted to go out (dont worry, the clients had told me if he got out he was fine). So I opened the door, and gladly let him out. See ya, Sunny, you little devil cat!! I then called my clients, who were fully apologetic and surprised by his behavior. They promised he will be outside for showings from here on out. That said, I survived. And I do have another Open House on Wednesday night from 5-7:30 if anyone would like to join me! 3141 Markle Rd, York. It’s a beautiful home, and I would appreciate the company, especially if you like cats and could be the Sunny soother. Because I clearly am not. Any of my realtor friends have any similar stories they’d like to share?
