Interesting facts regarding the history of our state of Georgia and the cotton crop industry.🫨🤯

📜 Today in Georgia History – August 12, 1909

Imagine offering $5 million to anyone who could wipe out a bug.

That is essentially what Georgia lawmakers proposed on August 12, 1909, when the Georgia General Assembly appealed to Congress to establish a $5 million reward for whoever could find a way to eliminate the boll weevil.

The remarkable part? The insect had not even reached Georgia yet.

State officials had good reason to worry. The boll weevil, a tiny beetle that attacks cotton buds and bolls, had crossed from Mexico into Texas during the 1890s and was steadily moving eastward across the Cotton Belt. Wherever it appeared, cotton yields could collapse.

For Georgia, the threat was enormous. Cotton had dominated the state's agricultural economy for generations. After the Civil War, thousands of farmers—landowners, tenants and sharecroppers alike—continued to depend heavily on the crop for their livelihoods.

Georgia's fears became reality in 1915, when the boll weevil was first reported in the state near Thomasville. Within only a few years, it had spread across Georgia.
The effects were devastating, but the invasion also forced changes that would reshape Georgia agriculture. Farmers increasingly experimented with crop diversification, planting more peanuts, corn and other crops rather than relying almost entirely upon cotton. Researchers and agricultural agents promoted new growing techniques and varieties designed to mature before boll weevil populations reached their peak.

Still, the little beetle proved extraordinarily difficult to defeat. For decades, farmers fought it with changing cultivation methods and pesticides. A coordinated eradication program begun much later finally succeeded in eliminating reproducing boll weevil populations from Georgia around 1990.

Congress never created the enormous prize Georgia requested in 1909.
But the request shows just how seriously Georgians viewed the approaching danger. Six years before the boll weevil crossed into the state, lawmakers already understood that one tiny insect had the potential to threaten an entire agricultural economy.

And on August 12, 1909, Georgia essentially told the nation: find a way to stop it—and we'll make you a millionaire many times over.
