Attention Louisiana homeowners and apartment residents,
As the freeze approaches, it's essential to take proactive steps to protect your homes. Here are some practical tips to ensure your space remains cozy and secure during this rare weather event.
For Residents/ Home Owners
1. Keep Faucets Dripping: Allow faucets to drip slightly to prevent pipes from freezing. (Remember water expands when it freezes)
2. Cabinets Open: Leave cabinet doors open under sinks to let warm air circulate around pipes.
3. Thermostat Settings: Maintain thermostat settings at a minimum of 55°F, even if you are away.
4. Seal Drafts: Use draft stoppers or rolled towels to block drafts under doors and windows.
5. Space Heater Safety: Use space heaters wisely—keep them at least 3 feet away from flammable materials and never leave them unattended. DO NOT use power strips or none protected extension cords. (Inspect all outlets)
6. Keep portable cellular devices,laptop, etc. charged, extra batteries, flashlights available in case of loss of power.
For Property Managers:
1. Insulate Pipes: Add insulation to exterior exposed pipes, especially in unheated areas like crawl spaces and garages.
2. Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect hoses and cover outdoor faucets with insulated covers.
3. Salt and Sand: Treat sidewalks and entryways with salt or sand to prevent ice buildup.
4. HVAC Maintenance: Ensure HVAC systems are inspected and functioning properly.
5. Emergency Contacts: Share maintenance and utility emergency contact numbers with residents/tenants.
6. Inspect Doors and Windows: Check for drafts or gaps, sealing them with weatherstripping or caulk.
7. Gutters and Roofs: Clear gutters of debris to prevent ice dams and ensure roofs are secure.
8. If you have a pool, make sure that you reach out to your local Pool maintenance vendor to ensure that pumps and any other items are safe during the freeze as some pool systems have freeze settings.
