Yesterday, the U.S. Department of Education announced a new Workforce Pell Grant program that could expand access to short-term career training programs beginning July 1, 2026.

The initiative will allow eligible students to use Pell Grants for high-quality workforce training programs focused on high-skill, high-wage, and in-demand careers — helping individuals gain workforce-ready skills in as little as eight weeks while reducing student debt barriers.

Workforce development continues to play a major role in the future growth of Hastings and the surrounding region — programs like this could create additional pathways for residents, employers, and future professionals across our community!

On Thursday, May 7, the Manufacturing Pathways Advisory Team and the Hastings Area Manufacturers Association partnered together to promote rewarding careers in manufacturing during the 2026 Night of Excellence at Hastings Middle School.

The two groups worked together to highlight the different pathways students can begin as early as middle school and high school—helping them choose the right classes and get on track for a career in manufacturing. Students are encouraged to take advantage of their Skilled Technical Science (STS) classes to build real-world skills and explore opportunities in today’s high-demand manufacturing fields.
