Hattiesburgers - if you've got a golf cart or low-speed vehicle and want to drive it on city streets - as allowed by Ordinance No. 3316 - you can begin registering them tomorrow, Thursday, September 15.
Here's everything you need to know to :
1. To register your golf cart or low-speed vehicle, you need to bring the following to City Hall (2nd Floor) beginning on Thursday, Sept. 15:
- a driver's license
- proof of insurance/financial liability
- make, model and VIN or Serial Number
- $100 for registration
2. The registration form and details can be accessed here: hattiesburgms.com/cityclerk. The second page of the form is an affidavit and must be notarized by our City Clerk staff. Please don't sign the form until you turn in your paperwork for registration at City Hall.
3. All registered golf carts and low-speed vehicles must meet safety standards under 49 CFR Section 571.500. This includes headlamps, front and rear turn signal lamps, tail lamps, stop lamps, reflectors, exterior mirror mounted on driver's or passenger's side, parking brake, VIN number or Serial Number, Type 1 or Type 2 seatbelts, proper windshield and an alert sound). The second page of the registration form is an affidavit that certifies and attests that your vehicle has all of these items.
4. Registered golf carts and low-speed vehicles may only be operated on public roads and streets where there is an established speed limit of 30 miles per hour or less. Additionally, the operation of golf cars and low-speed vehicles are prohibited on MDOT highways and interstates, as well as a list of streets due to high traffic counts, recommendations by governing authorities, street design and other factors that impede public safety.
