At a time of economic uncertainty, this is a strategic policy direction that has the means to encourage and expand development investment given that protracted timelines and prohibitive soft costs currently serve to deter or delay much needed small to mid-sized projects. These reforms can address these obstacles, spur economic development, and create much needed housing.

While it is critical that labor unions and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA reach an agreement to end the strike, it may be just as critical that a sustainable resolution be found. Making a deal just to appease labor will get the trains running today, but it will make our region less affordable and drive more people out of New York in the days, weeks, and years ahead.

Long Islanders cannot afford increased MTA LIRR fares and congestion pricing, nor can our businesses bear an increased MTA Payroll Tax.

Nearly a dozen striking LIRR workers are hauling in more than $200,000 a year in overtime alone — a mind-boggling figure that rivals Gov. Kathy Hochul’s entire salary.

Our Executive Director, Kyle Strober, was in studio this morning discussing the economic impact of a potential MTA labor strike with Macy Egeland, Alfonso Castillo, and Gerard Bringmann. MTA LIRR service will cease at 12:01 a.m. this Saturday, May 16th, should the Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA and five labor unions be unable to reach a deal.

According to a 2014 NYS Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli Report, it was estimated that a potential LIRR strike would cause $50 million in lost economic activity per day. That number would surely be higher today, 12 years since that report was issued. To suggest the impact of a strike would be devastating is an understatement.

ICYMI The Association for a Better Long Island spearheaded a business coalition letter with our partners Long Island Association, Long Island Builders Institute, LICA - Long Island Contractors Association, HIA-LI, CIBS-Long Island and Discover Long Island, to express deep concern regarding the negative economic impact of a potential strike by five of MTA LIRR’s operating unions.

A potential strike on May 16th, a week before Memorial Day, would exacerbate the economic impact as Long Island enters its peak tourism season. While we have great respect for LIRR employees, we are concerned that unprecedented raises for a minority of the LIRR workforce will be economically unsustainable for a mass transit system with chronic fiscal woes.

Runaway labor costs add to Metropolitan Transportation Authority - MTA financial shortfalls that continue to be pushed onto New Yorkers: LIRR commuters via fare hikes, businesses via the MTA payroll tax, and residents via congestion pricing. The cumulative impact could cause an exodus of those who drive the economy.

We remain optimistic that a resolution will be reached for the betterment of our regional and state economy.

We are saddened by the passing of Wilbur Breslin, a founding member of the Association for a Better Long Island. Wilbur Breslin was a titan of Long Island development, credited with bringing nearly 80% of national retailers to the region and shaping the suburban landscape as we know it. Generations of Long Islanders have enjoyed a quality of life directly attributable to his vision as a developer.

We don't need to eliminate environmental goals, we need to elongate them. Adding a burden of $4,000+ per household and an extra $2.23/gallon at the pump is simply unaffordable for Long Islanders. We need a timeline that attracts business, rather than forcing it out.
