When someone new sits across from me, they are usually nervous. Many start by apologizing for taking my time, or mention that at their last firm they mostly talked to an assistant.

In New York, child support starts with a formula, but it rarely ends there. The state begins with a percentage of combined parental income. 17 percent for one child, 25 percent for two, 29 percent for three. That is the starting point, not the whole story.

A will tells everyone what you want. It does not always spare your family the hard parts.

A complete plan does more. A power of attorney lets someone you trust handle your finances if you cannot. A health care proxy makes sure your medical wishes are followed. A trust can help your family avoid probate, the long, public court process a will alone leaves them to sit through.
