Roof moss isn't just ugly. It's actively destroying your shingles. Moss holds moisture against the roof's surface, breaks down the granules that protect shingles from UV exposure and weather, and shortens the roof's lifespan significantly. In the shaded, wooded conditions that most Poconos properties have, this is a very common issue. The right fix is a zinc or copper-based treatment...you can grab some at True Value & DIY...or have it applied by a contractor. It kills the moss and/or lichens and slows regrowth. What not to do: pressure wash the roof. It may feel satisfying, but it'll strip the granules right off your shingles and do more damage than the moss.

Hey, Poconos Home Buyer! Imagine this: You are under contract. Your mortgage is in process. This is not the time to buy furniture for that charming chalet in Arrowhead Lake. Or a jet-ski for fun days on Lake Wallenpaupack. Lenders pull your credit at the beginning of the process and again right before closing. If your debt-to-income ratio has increased in the meantime, because you opened a new credit card, financed a vehicle, or ran up an existing balance, your loan approval is at risk. You could be denied that mortgage. This catches buyers off guard all the time. The excitement of buying a new home comes with a natural urge to start buying things for it. Resist that urge until after the keys are in your hand and you officially own that Pennsylvania lake house. No new credit cards. No new financing. No large purchases on existing cards. If you have electric baseboard heaters, this one is for you. Clean them at least twice a year: once before heating season starts and again in spring. Dust and pet hair that builds up on the fins restricts airflow and makes the units work harder to heat the space. If you have a lot of dust or shedding pets, clean them more often. For vacation and lake homes that sit empty for long stretches at a time, it's easy to forget this step. But when you crank up the heat at Lake Wallenpaupack for the first time in October or November, you want clean fins, not the smell of burning dust filling the whole house. Does your lake home have electric baseboard heat? A lot of Poconos properties do.
