๐ Is Your Attic Breathing Properly? ๐ฌ๏ธ
Your attic relies on continuous airflow to stay dry and healthy. Cold air enters through the soffit vents at the eaves, flows past the insulation, and exhausts out through the roof vents.
When that airflow gets cut off, trouble starts fast:
โ Blocked Soffit Vents: Loose or blown-in insulation often gets pushed right up against the roof deck, completely covering the intake vents.
โ Fallen Soffit Baffles: Cardboard or foam baffles (rafter vents) are designed to keep an open channel for air above the insulation. If they fall out of place or were never installed, insulation slips down and chokes off airflow.
โ ๏ธ Moisture & Mold Growth: Without fresh intake air, warm, humid air from the living space gets trapped under the roof sheathing. That moisture condenses on the cold wood framingโcreating ideal conditions for mold growth and rot!
๐ What to look for:
If you notice frost or water staining on the underside of your roof decking during colder months, or dark staining along the lower roof rafters, improper attic ventilation is often the main culprit.
Proper baffle installation and clear soffit vents are simple fixes that prevent costly structural repairs down the road. During every home inspection, we check attic space ventilation, baffle placement, and moisture conditions to make sure your home stays safe and dry.
