There’s more to Belle Grove than what’s behind the front door. 🌿

Behind the Manor House, you’ll find gardens, fields and trails that tell their own stories.

The gardens are cared for with the help of a Shenandoah Valley Master Gardener through Virginia Cooperative Extension, with historic plant varieties, seed saving and plant propagation helping connect the garden to the past.

And beyond the gardens, the 19th Corps Trails wind through woodland and along remnants of Civil War-era trenches. You can actually walk through history here. The trails connect Belle Grove Plantation with the 128th New York Monument.

The land is also still working land. Belle Grove continues to use much of its agricultural acreage for hay, and this year some of that land was enrolled in the Virginia Grassland Bird Initiative, allowing nesting birds and other wildlife to thrive before the hay was cut.

I loved seeing this quieter side of Belle Grove - the gardens, the trails, the fields and the stewardship that keeps this place alive today.
