It’s honestly heartbreaking to drive around Sonoma County right now and see how much spraying is still happening.

More than 96% of our vineyards are not organic. In a region that prides itself on land stewardship, that should concern all of us. “Sustainable” is not the same as organic, it often just means less harmful, not good enough.

After all this rain, flooded fields, and runoff, those chemicals don’t stay put. They wash into our creeks, streams, and watershed, and ultimately into our rivers, harming fish and wildlife. This isn’t theoretical, it’s happening.

When you see vineyards with perfectly tidy rows and yellow strips under the vines, be aware. That neat appearance often comes from chemical herbicides, and it comes at a cost.

What’s especially frustrating is that many acclaimed w**eries and growers, including those associated with "prestigious" associations, promote their sustainability efforts while continuing to spray and choosing not to farm organically.

At this point, there is no excuse. Organic farming is proven, CCOF certification exists, and the tools are available. Choosing not to be organic is a choice.

Our water and land are precious. We should be holding ourselves, and our growers, to higher standards.

We NEED to do better.
