Russian River Tea Company is one of those little places that makes shopping local feel especially worthwhile.

What I love here is how personal everything feels. The tea blends are created with ingredients like locally grown roses, lavender, and mint, giving many of them a character that feels very specific to this area.

And then there is the chocolate.

Instead of carrying the same large brands you see everywhere, the shop features small-batch chocolates from local makers — beautifully made, a little indulgent, and absolutely worth trying.

As we move into fall and cooler weather, this feels like the perfect time to rediscover a good cup of tea and support a small local business while doing it.

Some properties are hard to compare because there simply are not many like them.

Sonoma County may be known as W**e Country, but there is so much more growing here than grapes.

I recently took a drive out to Walker’s Apple Farm in Sebastopol, and it reminded me how deep our agricultural history really is. Before grapes became the star of Sonoma County, apples were one of the major crops here — and West County still has the fog, soil, and climate that make them thrive.

Walker’s grows a beautiful variety of apples using organic and dry-farming methods, with different apples ripening at different times of the year. It is the kind of place that makes you want to buy a big bag, make a pie, add them to a salad, or simply enjoy them as they are meant to be eaten.

This county has so much knowledge, history, and possibility in the land itself. Grapes are part of the story, but they are not the whole story.

If you have time, take the drive — or even bike up if you want the full West County experience.

Crane Melon Barn is one of those Sonoma County treasures that feels truly local.

The Crane family created a melon that grows beautifully in our climate — with the evening marine layer, dry farming conditions, and the heavy clay soil that make this part of Sonoma County so unique.

Because the melon is thin-skinned, it is not something that ships well across the country. It is picked ripe, meant to be eaten within a day or two, and really has to be experienced here.

That is what makes it so special.

If you are looking for something wonderful for a picnic, a weekend table, or just a taste of Sonoma County at its most seasonal, Crane Melon Barn is absolutely worth the stop. But do not wait too long — the season is limited, and this year’s crop is not especially large.
