As 2021 comes to a close, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on my first year in real estate. Years ago, when I was in grad school, I remember a professor telling a classroom of us soon-to-be teachers that the great thing about teaching was that we’d never lose sleep at night wondering if we were making a difference. (That was true, though as it turns out, teaching makes you lose sleep over lots of other things). I’ll admit that when I decided to embark on this new journey into the world of real estate, one of the things I wondered about most was whether this was a role that made an impact like teaching did — whether I’d really feel like I was making a difference.
Now, 1 year in, I’m happy to say that I do. As agents, we meet people in a state of transition. Sometimes, it’s purely exciting — buying a first home after years of apartment life, upgrading to a larger home to better fit your family’s needs, relocating to be closer to beloved family members. Other times, it’s bittersweet — saying goodbye to a home where you raised your children, downsizing because you no longer need all of the space that comes with a large family home. Whatever the reason for the move, and whatever emotions accompany it, the transition period as we move our entire lives from one location to another one can be intense. This year, I was surprised by just how profoundly I found myself connecting with my clients, their stories, and their journeys, commiserating in their losses and celebrating their wins.
There are few life experiences that produce quite the depth and breadth of emotion that buying or selling a home does. A real estate agent has both the honor and the responsibility of not only bearing witness to that transition, but also facilitating it and making it go as smoothly as possible, all the while being a trusted and responsive advisor for their clients.
To the clients who entrusted me with that role this year, THANK YOU! It has truly been my pleasure to play a small part in helping each of you navigate this crazy market and ultimately accomplish your goals.
Also, a huge thanks to my mentor Sandra, my broker , and the entire CGA family!
